Tesla is going to pay holders of its convertible notes with a mix of cash and equity. According to Business Insider, Tesla has $920 million worth of debt coming due in March. After several dismal quarters, Tesla turned a corner in the third quarter of 2018. Paying in such a manner may signal CEO Elon Musk's belief the company can continue to turn a profit.
